China in Africa

Mosambique

  • The trade volume between China and Mosambique rose to $210 million in 2006. The main investments are going to industrial sectors especially fisheries, forest and service sector projects. In the construction sector are big dam projects like the mega dam in Mphada Nkuwu and ten more small and medium dams. The local construction sector is faced with chinese firms which are 50 to 70 per cent cheaper. The IT giant Lenovo is setting up a computer assembly plant and there is an agriculture project in the Zambesi River Delta which should be run by 20,000 Chinese Settlers who shall supply Chinese markets. Textile factories already exist in Mosambique. ( 10 October 2007: http://www.isn.ethz.ch/news/sw/details.cfm?ID=17974 )
